Losing the golden child is never easy – especially for Laurel Mack. Ellie was perfect, according to Laurel. And it doesn’t help that her second child is very rarely a part of her life, grown and independent. So when she meets a handsome Floyd Dunn, it all seems too good to be true. She can’t help but feel that connection she’s been missing with his daughter, Poppy, who is almost an identical match to Ellie. Ellie’s whereabouts begin to haunt Laurel – will she ever find out what happened to her daughter?

This book was rather saddening – you could feel the hopelessness of Laurel’s loss and the desperation of her wanting answers, her daughter back, and her to have a family again. The ending has a surprise shock and is quite disturbing. It reminded me of an LMN movie I had watched years back that still haunts me to this day. But don’t be discouraged, there is hope for Laurel. This was a story about second chances in a time of loss and confusion and Lisa Jewell did a phenomenal job.
