Introduction
True crime documentaries tend to be my go-to background noise when I am working in my office. It’s a bad habit, I know. It’s like white noise to me, something I can pay attention to in passing. Also, the police sirens add some urgency to my performance with the threat of sirens in the background. Maybe just a dash of paranoia.
Here are ten work-from-home-friendly documentaries in the true crime genre to have playing in the background.
The List
- Bodycam
Body Cam is a chilling docuseries following law enforcement’s daily encounters. Concurrently with the investigation, viewers will get background information on suspects in real time.
This is my favorite background show. Generally, I find myself watching these videos on Facebook, but I was ecstatic to find this on HBO.
2. Something is Wrong With Aunt Diane
The mystery surrounding the 2009 Taconic Wrong-Way crash is explored further in this documentary. What caused Diane Schuler to drive the wrong way? Was the supermom experiencing a medical emergency or something worse…
3. They Called Him Mostly Harmless
The body of an unidentified hiker was discovered, taking police on a long trail of clues about what became of this man in a true crime mystery and who he was…
4. Ken & Barbie Killers
Karla Homolka and Paul Bernardo were living a fairytale marriage in Port Delussy Canada. To the outside world, the Bernardos had everything.
Including the Scarborough rapist who had been terrorizing the Port Dalhousie area, killing two victims and assaulting many more.
5. Mean Girl Murders
Explore the dark side of female relationships, where jealousy and cliques turn silently vicious.
6. The Hillside Strangler
For years, it was believed that it was only one murderous psycho terrorizing the hillside of L.A.
Once caught, it became clear that it was a murderous love story between two American Serial Killers that joined in together in the late 1970’s, making headlines in Serial killer history.
7. Fit For A Killer
Okay, this one comes with a trigger warning: it is not for the easily perturbed. I.E Body horror—a tale for the bravest viewers.
8. The Idaho College Murders
The 2022 off-campus residence murders of four University of Idaho students: Kaylee Gonclaves, Maggie Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin, shocked the nation and became a headline-grabbing case.
9. Signs of A Psychopath
A docuseries examining archive footage of individuals, identifying the key behaviors that make a psychopath.
I’ve watched this one a couple of times. Alternative I found it rather informative and useful in some character development for a novel I am writing.
10. Murder in Glitter Ball City
This one was disturbing on many levels—we learned some things that we cannot unlearn and unsee the things that were shown as evidence by the defense.
Together we investigate the 2010 murder of Jamie Carroll, a well-known and loved hairdresser.
this one is just bizarre, in my opinion.
Conclusion
All of these documentaries provided a few moments of distraction – viewers take precaution. Watch at your own risk of distraction from responsibilities.
