No one can ever imagine the horrors that the residents of 1122 King Road endured the night of November 13, 2022, when an unknown assailant did the unthinkable – slaughtered four Idaho State Students and then left without a trace out into the cold darkness of Moscow, Idaho.
Moscow is a tight-knit community. Being a small college town, everyone knows everyone. Following the discovery of the murders, the town was in a stalemate of terror. Locals were unsure if there was a crazed murderer on the loose.
Who would have entered the house and killed these four so violently?
Kaylee Gonclaves, Madison Mogen, Ethan Chapin and Xana Kernodle were considered to be a part of the popular crowd. Participating in Greek life and organized sports, the four frequently spent a lot of time together. Ethan and Xana started dating in their freshman year. Maddie and Kaylee were the best of friends. Two of the girls worked as waitresses at a nearby Greek restaurant. Being a part of the campus Greek life invited a lot of attention from the locals and occasionally the police responding to a noise complaint. 1122 King Road played host to many house parties. Was the killer someone who attended one of these parties? Why were these four young people killed? Were they targeted?
The only item recovered for evidence was a Ka-Bar knife sheath in Madison Mogen’s room, indicating the killer began his killing on the third floor. entering from the sliding glass door to the kitchen from the porch, the unsub went directly to the third floor, suggesting either Kaylee or Maddie had been the original target.
Two of the surviving residents made it by the skin of their teeth. Bethany Funk’s bedroom was on the first floor and had ordered DoorDash either as the assailant entered the home or just before, as investigators determined the murders occurred between 1:30 and 4 am.
The knife itself was not found. A Ka-bar knife is lethal and is typically used for hunting or in defense against a bear attack. Doing what the assailant did had to involve trained skill.
Site surveillance from ring cameras in the area led investigators to a suspicious vehicle perusing the area at the time the murders had occurred. The driver of the white Hyundai was Bryan Kohberger, a criminology student of Washington State University.
Kohberger lived only fifteen minutes away from 1122 King Road.
On the night of the murder, his phone pinged his location near King Road at the same time the murders were occurring…and after.
His alibi? It’s unbelievable…
