My Darling Dreadful Thing by Johanna van Veen
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
“You need never be alone again now, Roos. You have named me and let me drink from you. We are wedded to each other now, you and I. You’re my helpmeet and yokemate, and I am yours. I shall keep you safe.”
Roos Beckman might be insane, but that doesn’t matter to Ruth, a spirit companion Roos can only see. After making a new friend at a seance, Roos and Ruth are whisked away to the crumbling manor of widower, Agnes Knoop. The estate she inherited upon her husband’s death is rotting – something is wrong. And when someone is murdered, Roos is faced with determining what – or who – is at fault for tearing away everything she holds dear.
This was one of the goriest, gothic, sapphic treats I have read all year, and I will literally read anything Van Veen writes. This was a great introduction to Van Veen’s atmospheric and haunting style.
