My Rating:
A charming, yet grotesque retelling of the haunting classic by Poe, ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’. Alex Easton, a soldier turned civilian, receives word that his childhood friend, Madeleine Usher is dying and he rushes to her bedside immediately. During his stay, Alex notices some peculiarities about his dear friend. She has been speaking in foreign tongues and sleepwalking at night. And there’s something peculiar about the strange growth of the fungi around the property, the rabbits, and the wildlife surrounding the lake nearby.
T. Kingfisher has quickly become one of my favorite horror authors bringing the grotesque and horrific to a new chilling level. I almost threw up at the end of this – and I want more. Biological horror and a classic bundled all into one.
