From beginning to end, we have watched the mystery of Gypsy Rose Blanchard unfold in front of our eyes. Now we finally get to hear Gypsy’s thoughts after serving her sentence for her part in the murder of her mother, Claudinea ‘Dee Dee’ Blanchard, who had kept Gypsy prisoner for all her life through excessive medical care and manipulation and other forms of abuse. Which rightfully so, because many have tried to tell it for her, and failed. It’s her story.
Since her incarceration, Hulu released a television series The Act which shook the audience to its core. The show gained a lot of popularity, however was scrutinized by those whom were personally close to Gypsy, her family, and of course Gypsy herself. The family at one point pursued legal action against the producers of the show as they had cut of contact from the Blanchards during the show development and had no concrete plans to give any of the proceeds to the Blanchards. Gypsy has shared that she has no plans to watch the show. I can’t say that I blame her. It wasn’t their story to tell, it was hers. And worse of all they didn’t have her permission, they had spoken with Nicholas Godejohn, who is serving a life sentence for first-degree murder.
In 2017, a year after Gypsy had entered a plea of guilty to second degree murder, she agreed to participate in HBO’s documentary Mommy Dead & Dearest which gave a sliver of insight of what Gypsy had gone through in that time.
Life in prison, Gypsy was able to turn things around. She got an education, she got to explore who she was apart from the alternate reality her mother had kept her prisoner in for so long. Gypsy Rose and Ryan Anderson tied the knot and are now united.
Now, after serving 8 of the 10 year sentence, Gypsy was released only a week ago on November 28th. After facing the parole board, the anxiety of release and enjoying the New Year with her hubby, Gypsy gets to tell the full story, correct some wrongs led by the Act. Check it out now!
Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s story has always been one that hit close to home for me. Having been in and out of hospitals most of my childhood with my mother as my primary advocate and guardian, I can understand where she felt she had no reason to doubt what her mother was telling her. You’re supposed to be able to trust your parent. You want to believe that they know what’s best for you. And when that’s anything but the case, what can you do?
I am also just as flabbergasted by Dee Dee’s ability to manipulate the medical staff that performed these procedures that Gypsy didn’t even need, when so many people struggle to find a doctor that will even listen to them. I can’t count how many times I’ve been given absurd advice by a doctor who’d blatantly ignored me as I told my medical history ( I have an autoimmune disease), advice that anyone in my condition would know to be wrong. It goes both ways. But still, how did she do it? It’s mind-boggling. Masterful is the only way that can describe Dee Dee’s ability to manipulate.
I hope Gypsy is living her best life, she deserves it. She has served her time. She is becoming an advocate for survivors of Munchausen by Proxy. In the case of Claudinea ‘Dee Dee’ Blanchard, it is said to be “one of the most egregious cases of parental abuse” seen by legal officials.
Following the documentary, Gypsy will also be releasing a book titled Released : Conversations on the Eve of Freedom. She’s making something of herself and building a new life, and I couldn’t be happier for her!
